Solidarity Letter in Support of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Dear Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan,

We at the Katutu Civil Rights Center stand in unwavering solidarity with you during this challenging time. Your recent suspension from the Nigerian Senate, following your courageous allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, is deeply troubling and raises significant concerns about the treatment of women in political spaces.

Your decision to speak out against such misconduct exemplifies remarkable bravery and a steadfast commitment to justice. It is disheartening that, instead of your allegations being met with a thorough and impartial investigation, you have faced suspension; a move that not only silences your voice but also sends a discouraging message to other women who might seek to report misconduct.

We firmly denounce the Nigerian Senate’s decision to suspend you, viewing it as a callous attempt to undermine the principles of accountability and transparency that are foundational to any democratic institution. Such actions perpetuate a culture of impunity and deter other victims from coming forward.

As we approach International Women’s Day on March 8, 2025, under the theme “Accelerate Action,” it is a poignant reminder of the systemic challenges women continue to face globally. Your experience underscores the urgent need to accelerate efforts toward gender equality and to create environments where women can participate fully and freely in all spheres, including politics, without fear of harassment or retribution.

The prevalence of harassment and violence against women in politics is alarmingly high, not just in Nigeria but across the African continent. A 2021 study by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the African Parliamentary Union (APU) revealed that 80% of women parliamentarians in Africa have experienced psychological violence, 67% have been subjected to sexist behavior or remarks, 42% have received threats of death, rape, beatings, or abduction, and 40% have endured sexual harassment.

We will not remain silent in the face of such injustices. We will all rise in her support and defense when a woman leader is attacked. Your resilience and courage serve as an inspiration to women across Africa and the world. Please know that you are not alone; we stand with you in solidarity, advocating for a just and equitable society where every woman’s voice is heard and respected.

In unity and support,

Farida Bemba Nabourema
